Olly Akkerman, PhD candidate at Berlin Graduate School of Muslim Cultures and Societies
Olly Akkerman

Olly Akkerman is a doctoral candidate at the Berlin Graduate School of Muslim Cultures and Societies (BGSMCS), which is part of the Freie Universität Berlin. Currently residing in Berlin, she is working towards her doctorate in Islamic Studies, focussing on notions of archive and secrecy in Isma’ili communities.

In her project, entitled "From Sacred to Secret. The Bohra Archive and the Language of Secrecy", Olly analyses how an undisclosed archive belonging to an Indian Shi’a community, the Bohras, functions as a repository of secret manuscripts. Combining classical archival work with participant observation in the Bohra community, both in the clerical establishment and the public, she investigates the social role of the archive in the community.
